Myanmar

Yangon

The largest city in Myanmar. Formerly called Rangoon, and the city has been the capital until a few years ago.

A wonderful city, full of colorful markets. Old colonial buildings from the English era, wide streets surrounded by old trees. The center of the city is bursting with activity, with many tea shops, street vendors, three-wheeled bicycles taxiing in the picture, in between comes an 80-year-old public bus, crowded with busy people.

In the middle of it all, the majestic golden Shewedagon Pagoda rises, truly one of Asia’s most beautiful pagoda complexes at all. The pagoda is located next to one of the city’s largest parks, and one of the most beautiful scenarios is to consider the pagoda from the park, with the lake as the center.

Mandalay

The last royal capital of the former Burmese kingdom, today a busy city with more than 1 million people. Located by the legendary Irrawaddy River. The city is not far from the mountainous region where the well-known Shan and Kachin populations live, and act as the gateway to the northern regions of Myanmar.

In the area around Madalay are other royal cities such as Aga, Amarapura, Mingun and Sagaing. All these help make Mandalay one of the most historic places in Myanmar.

In the middle of Mandalay, the old royal palace is located in a huge park, surrounded by walls and moat on all sides.

Mandalay is home to a variety of ancient crafts. One of the most well-known is the manufacture of gold leaf. This is done by hand power, or more specifically muscle power, as the gold is hammered out by strong men. One can marvel at how much leaf gold can come in about 1 ounce (31 g) of gold. The gold can be hammered down to 0.025 mm thickness.

Bagan

Truly one of the world’s largest archaeological wonders. Founded in 849 on a flat plain overlooking the Ayeyarwaddy River. Originally, there were over 10,000 pagodas, now about 4,000, spread across the plain surrounding Bagan. When you fly into Bagan, it is seen as a forest of pagodas. Bagan is also interesting for its urban culture. A quiet village with an old Asian lifestyle where life is slow. Traffic of beef carts and tractors, as well as herds of cattle throughout the city.

Inle Lake

Inle Lake is one of the most popular and unique places to go in Myanmar. The lake is 22 km. long and 11 km. wide. In the area, Intha lives the population, mostly living in post houses on the banks of the lake, or along the many canals that surround the lake. The lake is particularly well known for its floating fields where all kinds of vegetables are grown. Boating in small narrow sampans is the way to get around. The quieter ones take place at oars or paddles, where a very special calm method, using one leg is prevalent. If you need to go longer, carry your luggage, the propulsion is using a long-axle Volvo Penta engine that gets the boat moving at a really good speed. It is a great pleasure to sail across the lake in this way.

There are some good markets by the lake, which are reached by boat. Hotels along the shore are, for most people, built into the water, so you stay with water under the room and a balcony facing the lake.

In the towns around the lake, there are numerous local handicraft workshops and shops.

Ngapall Beach

Ngapall Beach, located approx. 45 minutes flight from Yangon, along the west coast of Myanmar.

Beautiful beach area, with golden sandy beaches, palm trees and lovely inviting turquoise water.

The beach overlooks a Bay of Bengal and is a quiet and peaceful place, a great place to relax.

Good resorts and hotels can be found in the area, see about hotels elsewhere on the website. From the beach area various trips can be arranged to sights in the area.
